American University will use VR heads to detect signs of concussion
Every sports technology company is struggling to find a solution to the player's concussion, so VR does not surprise us. Most companies are focused on protecting the brain and preventing any damage, especially those related to football protection equipment. Now, a company is using VR to quickly and efficiently detect players' head injuries on the sidelines. In fact, Iowa State University has already seen the prospect of this technology and has announced plans to integrate VR into their sports.
EyeSink was developed by SyncThink, a neuroscience company based in Boston, Massachusetts. This portable VR headset incorporates eye tracking technology to detect and identify signs of concussion in less than a minute. This device can measure eye movement injury and vestibular function loss (common symptoms of recent concussion), and its ability to quickly detect any trauma makes EysSink a perfect tool for clinicians to use on the sidelines.
After wearing the heads-up display, players suspected of concussion will perform a test where they need to stare at a point and move in a circular motion. At this time, the device will measure and evaluate the player. If there is no traumatic brain injury, the player can easily accomplish this task. As shown in the figure, for normal people, the eye movement detection image will be almost perfectly circular as shown on the left, otherwise it will be scattered and shifted as shown on the right.
This FDA-approved head display has another effect that provides a simple way to detect the recovery time of the wounded. The VR device can be used on a regular basis, which means clinicians can apply it multiple times to patients, measure patient recovery, and customize the experience for each patient.
Iowa State University will begin to include this technology in rugby and wrestling events, and plans to promote it to his sports program, as well as the University's concussion management agreement.
